Editorial Review
(3*) Services: Web HostingDomain Registration
⇔ Redirected from prgmr.com
Tornado VPS is a focused, old-school VPS provider that has been active since 2005 , originally under the Prgmr.com name. They do one thing only – Linux and BSD virtual private servers on Xen – and they clearly target people who already know how to manage a server. There is no shared hosting, no WordPress "one-click" bundles, no site builders. Everything revolves around a lean Xen virtualisation stack with full root access , SSH management and a console aimed at system administrators rather than beginners.
The platform runs on the Xen Project hypervisor with a CentOS dom0 , with a history that goes from early FreeBSD jails and Xen2 in their first year to the current Xen setup. That long evolution shows they are a small, technically driven outfit that has lived through many generations of Linux/BSD, kernel quirks and bootloader issues, and the documentation reflects this experience.
On the VPS side, the offer is deliberately straightforward: a single line of Xen Virtual Private Server plans scaling from 1.25 GiB RAM / 15 GiB SSD / 1 vCPU up to 15 GiB RAM / 180 GiB SSD / 4 vCPUs , all based on SSD storage. Network bandwidth is stated as 750 Mbps max outbound , plus a clearly defined minimum guaranteed throughput under congestion (from 2.5 Mbps on the smallest plan up to 30 Mbps on the largest). There are no overage charges; once you know how much RAM and disk space you need, choosing a plan is easy.
A major strength is the range of operating systems and the depth of low-level control. From the console you can boot prebuilt images or full installers for AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, CentOS, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Alpine, Arch, NixOS, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD , often with multiple images per distribution and the ability to work in PV or HVM mode when appropriate. For BSD and NixOS users in particular, this is a rare combination: full control, Xen, and first-class support for less common OS options.
The VPS console itself is accessed over SSH (you log in as vps-label@console.tornadovps.com using your SSH key). From there you can power the VM on or off, access a serial console, trigger Linux Live Rescue , launch netboot installers , reinstall from prebuilt images, manage reverse DNS , adjust live migration settings, and inspect basic details such as RAM, disk, IP addresses and virtualization mode. It is a very "Unix admin" control environment: no flashy web GUI, just a compact text menu exposing the functions a technical user actually needs.
When it comes to policy, Tornado VPS is both privacy-aware and strict about abuse. The Acceptable Use Policy makes it clear that the platform is not intended for bulk email: any bulk mailing, even legitimate campaigns, requires a separate agreement, and spam activity or purchased lists are explicitly forbidden. At the same time, Tor relays are allowed, and even Tor exit nodes can be used as long as the customer handles abuse complaints responsibly. Together with their stance on logging and abuse handling, they come across as a technically liberal host that still protects its network.
Overall, Tornado VPS is a no-nonsense Xen VPS shop for technically adept users . Anyone looking for hand-holding, application stacks and a point-and-click control panel will not be happy here. For those who want a stable Xen VM in a US West Coast data center with strong OS coverage, IPv6 and transparent resource allocation, it is a very attractive niche option. Price & Cost
The Xen VPS lineup is intentionally simple. At the time of review the main packages are structured roughly as follows (all prices in USD...
