Hilo Raises $19M for Blood Pressure Wearables
Over/under.
Hilo
Blood pressure is a mainstream metric.
What’s happening: Hilo raised $19M in a Series B extension to launch its wearable-led blood pressure health system in the US.
BP+. Hilo Core combines a screenless wearable, FDA-cleared connected cuff, and app to continuously track ambient signals. Using an optical sensor, it contextualizes up to 35 daily readings against heart rate and sleep, tracking BP trends and coaching improvement over time.
Counting 200K global users and eight clinical studies, the Swiss company will build on last year’s $42M raise to reach US consumers, with plans to become a regulated medical platform.
High-strung. Half of American adults have hypertension, but only a fourth have it under control and a sixth are completely unaware — making passive monitoring a high-value add for nearly every wearable maker. Being suggestive, WHOOP’s wellness function ruling from the FDA validated optical sensors and predictive features from Apple, Oura, and Samsung.
Systemic. Yet, unable to diagnose and requiring calibration for accuracy, others are assembling clinically aligned systems. Rings from Signal and Sky Labs claim to deliver readings over estimations, Withings and Garmin pair their own FDA-approved smart cuffs, and Empirical Health taps AI to derive hypertension from wearable data and blood tests.
Looking ahead: Driven by lifestyle choices and asymptomatic until major health events, hypertension is a dream use case for wearable tech. But as platforms draw the line between wellness feature and medical device, consumer adoption will depend on attributes of both.
