MutexCam is a Mac utility that controls your camera and microphone for every app from one place. It combines a global microphone mute, a camera off switch, push-to-talk, and a panic shortcut that turns both off at once. It works with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, FaceTime, and any other app.

How do I install MutexCam and set up its permissions?

Install MutexCam from the Mac App Store and open it. Approve the camera extension when prompted, under System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions, and allow camera access. Then select "Mutex Camera" as the camera in your meeting app – once. Microphone mute and push-to-talk work immediately, with no permissions at all.

How do I mute my microphone in every Mac app at once?

Click the Mic switch in MutexCam's floating panel, or use the menu bar icon. MutexCam mutes at the system level, so every input device is silenced for every app simultaneously. How do I show a custom image instead of my webcam?

Upload any PNG, JPEG, or HEIC image in MutexCam's settings – a "Be right back" card, an avatar, or a company logo. Whenever the camera switch is off, Mutex Camera outputs that image to every app instead of your video feed, correctly letterboxed at 720p. Remove the image to revert to plain black frames.

How does push-to-talk work on a Mac?

With MutexCam you stay muted by default and hold ⌥Space to speak – in any app, even when its window isn't focused. Release the key and you're silent again, like a walkie-talkie. A clear TALKING indicator in the floating panel shows your live state.

What is the panic button?
