DoE Fires The $5 Billion Starter Gun For Its AI-Targeted Genesis Mission

In the eight months since its creation, the leaders of the US government’s Genesis Mission, which aims to use emerging AI capabilities in concert with supercomputers and, more recently, quantum computing, to advance science, has been putting various pieces in place to meet its mandate.<br>The Department of Energy, which President Trump tasked to lead the initiative when he signed the initial executive order in November 2025, in May created the Genesis Mission Consortium to expand the program’s private-public partnership nature. The Consortium now includes more than 340 members, including 157 private companies, 142 universities, and DoE and National Nuclear Security Administration’s 16 national laboratories.

Last month, the program unveiled the Quantum Genesis initiative, bringing in the third leg – along with supercomputing and AI – of what is expected to be drivers of significant new capabilities in HPC of the future. The announcement followed a request for information put out by the DoE about “scientifically relevant” fault-tolerant quantum systems and put in place an ambition plan to develop and deploy the world’s first such computer for R&D programs by 2028.<br>The expectation of many in the industry is that practical, fault-tolerant quantum systems are likely coming later this decade or early in the next. That said, the industry now will see an influx of government money coming into the mix, which federal agencies apparently expect will accelerate development efforts and the timeline.<br>278 Projects Funded<br>The industry this week got a good look at what kind of money is being pushed to Genesis Mission and what the government expects from it. At the first Genesis Mission Summit in Washington, DC, the DoE announced the first 278 projects that will be funded by the initiative. Michael Kratsios, assistant to the president and director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, said more than $5 billion in federal commitments are being made to expand the Genesis Mission.

In addition, Kratsios announced the Genesis Mission’s National Science and Technology Challenges, which touch on a range of priorities from healthcare and energy to manufacturing, infrastructure, and affordability, and which participants can use the initiatives framework to address. For example, those working on finding the root causes of chronic disease will be able to use data from the Health and Human Services department, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the National Science Foundation, while the DoE will use AI-based digital twins to improve the country’s power grid.<br>Other challenges including detecting biological threats early and attributing them to sources, accelerating the design of weapons systems, and creating autonomous, AI-driven laboratories.<br>Microsoft And HPE Join In<br>Along with the announcements rolling out from the Genesis Mission, Microsoft – a member of the project’s partner consortium – said it is investing $60 million to support the efforts. According to Chris Barry, Microsoft’s president of US public sectors industry group, $40 million will be available in Azure cloud compute and AI credits that will go to researchers over the next three years to help pay large-scale AI and scientific workloads. The other $20 million will go towards engineering, architecture, deployment, and adoption support to expand cloud and AI capacity. This is obviously a mere drop in the bucket, of course. But Microsoft no doubt wants to be in the front line when and if Genesis projects decide to rent rather than build AI supercomputers.

In addition, Microsoft is launching Scientific Partnership Advancing Research and Knowledge (SPARK) to coordinate the vendor’s work with the Genesis Mission, offering access to the Microsoft Discovery platform that includes AI models, simulations, data, and experimental workflows, and promoting the work it’s doing in quantum research, including with its Majorana quantum chip (below).

HPE said it has been selected for six of the projects, and that it is building Lux (below), a dedicated AI system that will be housed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and will be the first such supercomputer for science to support the Genesis Mission.

The Genesis Mission projects a massive, all-of-government, public-private effort with a lot of money being pushed to fund big projects, an initiative that some members are equating with the World War II-era Manhattan Project to build the first nuclear bomb and NASA’s Apollo moon-landing program.<br>A “New Golden Age” of Science
