Dramas in backyard
Not something I would normally spend time on but allow me to gossip on the dramas that happened and are happening in my backyard .
The sculpture
My daughter’s flute teacher lives in the historic Oakwood neighborhood. To kill time while waiting for her lesson to end, I once took a walk in the nearby Historic Oakwood Cemetery. For anyone who ever took a walk in there, you can’t escape the elegant monument below:
The Cancer, the presidential affair, and the fatal car accident
The commemorated person of the dove monument is Elizabeth Edwards who died of cancer in 2010, before suffering an extramarital affair from her husband, the 2004 democratic vice presidential nominee John Edwards, and loss of her 16-year old son to a car accident (commemorated by the angle monument in above picture).
The Murder
In 2018, a rich real estate developer was found dead with a dog leash wrapped around his neck – with the dog still attached to the leash. His then 16 years old son was charged with murder but the charge was eventually dismissed. Prior to his death, the developer had just gone through a divorce and "was having issues with his new girlfriend ", as told by the son .
The Castle
Out of nowhere in the hills of North Carolina there stands an unfinished castle , started by a local sculptor 20 years ago. In 2014 a Kickstarter campaign was initiated to finish it with the promised grant of knighthood and sculpted marble gargoyle .
The romance and the lawsuit
In 2026, with a lawsuit filed by a woman against her ex-boyfriend, the fate of the castle lies in question. The boyfriend is the sculptor who owns the castle, and the woman, was the girlfriend of the murdered real estate developer.
The Con Artist?
Robert Mihaly, the "sculptor" of Elizebeth Edward’s monument, the builder and owner of the castle, and the boyfriend, is an intriguing figure to say the least. A law school graduate turned artist, if the dirt that came out of the lawsuits is correct, he actually outsourced the monument to a Chinese machine sculpting company. The Michelangelo’s final touch he put on the monument on site of the cemetery was all but a show .
Ditto to the marble gargoyles he promised to the Kickstarter campaign for the castle and probable more which makes me wonder, isn’t Robert Mihaly an avant-garde performance artist prophetically mocking what we all are doing today: outsourcing creative tasks to open weight Chinese generative AI ? The only difference? We don’t feel ashamed of and the need to hide it.
The Plea
The father, the son, the lovers, the cheaters… all those mortals , those interesting, tempted, struggled, tragic, or twisted souls …
The murder, the affair, the lawsuit… all these seemingly random but somehow connected local news stuff, makes me want to ask, what’s the meaning of life ?
Can someone please make a movie out of these?
