PlayStation Network outage leaves players dreading all-digital future

Sony's PlayStation Network experienced significant issues Friday morning that affected everything from signing in to playing games. Downdetector shows a massive spike in user error reports starting around 6:47 a.m. EDT, which, at the time of publication, has dissipated but not gone away entirely.<br>According to Sony’s PlayStation Status monitor, these problems are still ongoing at time of publication. "All services are experiencing issues," according to Sony.<br>As for the full range of errors detailed on Sony's dashboard, players may run into issues when performing the following: signing in, creating accounts, and editing account details; launching games, apps, or using network features; accessing PlayStation Video content; purchasing, browsing, and downloading games via the PlayStation Store; accessing products on PlayStation Direct. These errors could occur across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and the web. The issues seem to have been caused by connectivity errors with AWS servers, which Amazon says it has resolved.
The downtime interrupted the opening hours of the beta for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, which is receiving significant flak for a PC port that has major performance issues and intrusive DRM.
While Sony's PSN problems seem to have mostly ended, the downtime couldn’t have come at a worse time for the PlayStation maker. The company is still receiving significant backlash over its recent announcement that it will stop supporting physical games on its platforms by 2028. Since then, PlayStation fans have filled comment sections for virtually every announcement around Sony games and hardware with pleas for the company to reverse its decision.<br>“This is the future PlayStation is pushing: once servers are down or have problems, all your games will be useless,” Pirat_Nation posted on X.
During the downtime, some players were unable to log into their PSN account and access their digital goods, while others could log in but found that their library was missing some or all of their games.
While part of the backlash against Sony’s decision to end production of physical discs is likely driven by nostalgia, the outrage underscores serious consumer rights concerns. For the most part, when you “purchase” digital media, like games or movies, you are actually acquiring a license to access that content: The problem is that this license can be revoked. Sony recently did this when a contract with a film company lapsed, leading to hundreds of films, including Terminator 2, being removed from users’ libraries even if they purchased them.<br>When digital storefronts for older consoles are taken down, there isn't a good way for users to access their previously purchased games. The situation caused the PC storefront GOG.com to draw attention to its own DRM-free offline installers, which let users download a compressed version of the game that can be accessed without servers. Given these circumstances, players have taken to creative solutions, like recreating physical cartridge systems on PC and ramping up PS5 emulation efforts. With the relative absence of consumer protection when it comes to digital goods, PlayStation fans are right to worry about a future in which they don’t own the games they purchase.
