“if money didn’t matter, what would your job be?”
it’s a pretty standard “getting to know you” question. perhaps a first date question, or the second coffee run with a coworker, or over lunch with a new friend. i like the question - you can learn a lot about a person from it.
my response is never a title. my follow-up is normally “what does it mean for money to not matter?” not as an annoying philosophical gotcha, but to contextualize the question better.
winding back for a second, i’m not married to a job title. i don’t have a dream job that can be described in one phrase, perhaps not even a sentence. i could probably convey it if we spent the day together, experiencing my purpose distilled in multiple conversations. i have a dream. not a dream job.
i want to use my gifts (talents and privilege) to create something (infrastructure, software, a process, a program, etc.) that helps more than a billion people meaningfully.
i live a fragment of this dream through writing and sharing opportunities every single day. it grounds me in my purpose, while keeping the thirst for my dream unquenched. it’s not enough, but it’s enough to gratify my dreams and sustain them.
so, does money not matter because i have an endless supply, or does money not matter because it no longer holds any weight in the world? they might seem like the same thing, but my answer changes depending on the weight of money, even if it doesn’t matter.
if money didn’t matter, i would continue to pursue this dream, probably just in a more ambitious timeline. if i had endless money, i would fuel the dreams of millions of others. if money had no weight in the world, i would dedicate myself to building systems that bring people care more efficiently and effectively. in the endless-money world, money still works, so i spend it. in the weightless-money world, capital means nothing, so the only thing left for me to give is labour and design.
i find a lot of peace in the fluidity of how my dreams can be pursued. it’s wonderful to chase after my dreams from so many different angles.
if money didn’t matter, my dream job would be living this purpose every day with absolute freedom to experiment with how to actualize it. i’m working towards this, despite money mattering. i just have to get creative with how this experimentation and ambition can sustain me as well.
