I’m so excited that @JensenHuang is a believer in open source now, looking forward to the CUDA and GPU driver open source release!

For my first post, I’m sharing a letter @NVIDIA signed on why open models matter.

AI will transform every industry, power every company, and be built by every country.

Open models strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion, and enable sovereignty.

The world needs both frontier closed models and frontier open models.

And @satyanadella coming out for open source too, can’t wait for the open sourcing of Windows and MS Office!

Open-weight models are essential to a healthy AI ecosystem. Together with others across our industry, we are outlining a path for open-weight models to strengthen American competitiveness and expand economic opportunity, while protecting national security. microsoft.com/en-us/corporat…

funny to see people jump to the conclusion I must want to ban open weight models.. I actually think open models can be very useful!<br>But it’s interesting how some historically extremely anti-open source companies are suddenly all in favor of openness 🤔

This is a false equivalence. Everyone has the right to keep their code private. The problem is when someone tries to stop OTHERS from open sourcing.

I’m so sorry, but you are definitely wrong. I wish you had read the letter more clearly.

Signing an open weights letter costs Nvidia nothing. Open sourcing the driver stack would cost them plenty, which is why nobody expects it. cc @techimpactTV

Interesting take when your models are built on open source code and stolen human content.

jensen never tried to get opengl or triton banned by the government, did he?

RIDICULOUSLY bad faith.

Allowing open source software does not mean all software should be open source.

This is false equivalence nonsense and you know it.

No one is demanding Anthropic go open source, you do you man, but we won't subsidize your business with regulatory carve outs.

Compete in the market.

Am I missing something? Windows is closed, but Linux/MacOS exist, and MSFT has never tried to lobby the government to ban competition

This is so lame, the equivalent would be if Nvidia opposed AMD and others from building GPU software and making it available to public

The cringe is high

What a tone-deaf reaction from someone who represents the very tip of the spear of AI development.

Firstly, Nvidia made *foundational* contributions to the mass-diffusion of machine intelligence: NCCL, Megatron/Nemotron, and so much more. Many of them were open sourced. Without Jensen and Nvidia, the total number of people pushing the frontier would be far lower.

But more importantly: standing up for open models isn’t an indictment of closed models, or proprietary technology more broadly. Insinuating as much is disingenuous and misleading.

None of the signatories in Jensen’s post are asking for open weights to be the only way to build AI; they’re simply arguing for their right to exist, regardless of who trained them.

Interesting timing, as Anthropic pushes more money into lobbying US...
