Is FiberFS an AI project?

Reza Naghibi - July 27th 2026

So this isn’t a blog post I was expecting to write as one of my first pieces for FiberFS. I was expecting to deep dive into technical aspects of filesystems, caching, and other mundane topics. However, I do get the sense that we are entering a new era of software development. An era where what was previously not possible is now possible, for better or worse. If it isn’t obvious, I’m talking about the era of AI.

So is FiberFS an AI project? No, it’s not. It’s 100% human written and human powered and will remain this way for as long as possible. However, FiberFS is a project that will fully utilize AI where appropriate. So in this sense, maybe we can call FiberFS a human powered and AI assisted project. In the end, FiberFS strives for the following goals:

To have the best and most complete set of features when compared to other filesystems. This includes overall performance and efficiency.

To have a somewhat traditional yet rigorous development, testing, and release process. This will give our users stability they can count on, year after year.

To deliver maximum product value. This means FiberFS will be free for a large majority of users and a very small subset of very large users will pay a small nominal fee.

To allow our users to fork, extend, and use the product as they wish, with no limitations. This includes AI enhancements. If a feature you need doesn’t exist, FiberFS has a great foundation to build on.

I don’t view this decision as controversial or contentious, but rather just normal adoption of a new technology, something we do regularly in software. I am sure there are plenty of valid arguments for deeper AI adoption and I think every person, project, and business should evaluate them based on their needs and come to their own conclusions.

I read a quote a few years ago which keeps on drawing me back. To paraphrase, it goes something like this: I want AI to do my laundry and dishes so that I can do art and writing, and not the other way around. I believe AI is fully capable of helping with the “laundry and dishes” aspect of project work and I also believe that human centric projects can thrive and innovate in this new era.
