Analog Maximalism - JASON JOURNALS

“Analog Maximalism” is another way to say “Digital Minimalism.” The point is to focus more on what you’re doing and less on what you’re trying to not be doing. It’s like minding the positive over the negative. The benefits of an analog lifestyle are easier to obtain this way, while avoiding a relapse to a digital lifestyle and its detriments.

This idea was recently reiterated for me by an article at The Analog Family, “Fix Your Analog Life First.” The author, Katherine Martinko, talks about remembering or finding things to do, like you once did, before you became over-reliant on and overwhelmed by your smartphone. The biggest thing for me has been switching to pen+paper for most text-based things: journaling, blogging, to-dos, and calendars.

It began with journaling by handwriting in a physical book. Then I started drafting blog posts by hand. Next I moved my to-dos and calendars to a paper planner. Then I combined all that into a single book, using the Bullet Journal Method. For me, these changes have been monumental and pivotal in getting me off my iPhone more. The handwriting process takes time, helps me think, and requires intentionality. All these help my brain to break the habit of using my phone.

All it takes is, I think, one key thing to get started on better habits, using your smartphone in moderation. It can be a big-ticket item or something small, as long as it’s key, something analog that will most likely grab you more than your phone does. And it starts with only a single thing, changing one variable at the outset. It likely will snowball from there, gaining momentum and growing to bigger change over time.

Once I was writing on paper, I then switched to reading on paper (more physical books, less Kindle). These are things that are working for me. Find what works for you. Benefits like more calm, satisfaction, and feeling alive are real, and they’re really worth it.

No A.I. here.
