The project-responsible company Eco Stor has completed the first section of the battery storage system in Förderstedt in the Salzlandkreis district of Saxony-Anhalt. The system will eventually have a capacity of 300 MW and a storage capacity of 716 MWh – making it the largest in Germany. Approximately 200 battery containers have been installed since construction began in November 2025. A section with 100 MW capacity is to be connected in the coming weeks and go into operation later in the year.

The 192 battery containers of the system are already in place and equipped with 1536 battery racks and 638,976 battery cells. Eco Stor plans to connect a portion of these to the system control in the coming weeks. This will be followed by tests and connection to the grid. Electricity from the battery storage

The electricity storage system in Förderstedt stores the then cheaply purchased energy and feeds it back into the grid at times when there is not enough energy available – for example, during calms and lack of sun. The expansion of the battery storage to the maximum capacity of 300 MW is scheduled for completion in 2027 – presumably in the second quarter. The system will then be fully operational and the largest of its kind in Germany. Previously, the record holder was the battery storage system in Bollingstedt, Schleswig-Holstein, with 103.5 MW and a storage capacity of 238 MWh.

However, the electricity storage system in Förderstedt is unlikely to hold the title of the largest battery storage in Germany for long. Competitors with higher capacity and storage are already in the pipeline.

For example, EnBW intends to build a 400 MW system on the site of a former nuclear power plant in Philippsburg, Baden-Württemberg, which is to have a storage capacity of 800 MWh. An even larger system is planned for Waltrop in North Rhine-Westphalia, but not until 2028. BKW and Luxcara plan to build a battery storage system here three times the size of the one in Förderstedt. This system will have a capacity of 900 MW and a storage capacity of 1800 MWh. Further large battery storage systems in Germany with even greater capacity and storage are currently in the planning stages.
