Russia’s version of Amazon is called Wildberries and recently Ukraine, as part of its strategic deep strike offensive, attacked and destroyed 10 Wildberries warehouses.

Wildberries is Russia’s largest online retailer, often compared to Amazon, with an estimated 200+ warehouses and logistics centers (sortation, returns, fulfillment) across the Russian Federation. [Amazon has 1,000 such facilities in the US.]

Total warehouse infrastructure covers roughly 27,000,000 square feet, supported by a network of over 45,000 pickup points (customer collection locations, since Wildberries relies heavily on pickup rather than home delivery ). Some more recent counts put dedicated “order points” at ~83,000 as of April 2026.

Daily order volume exceeds 20 million, equivalent to more than 7 billion items processed per year, with a monthly active user base over 70 million. This is a big enterprise.

Wildberries holds about 50% of Russia’s online retail market — ahead of closest rival Ozon at roughly 32% — and is particularly dominant in electronics and non-food retail. They sell a great amount of dual use or primarily military gear.

Marketplace platforms overall (multi-seller sites like Wildberries and Ozon, as opposed to single-brand stores) now account for about 64% of Russia’s total e-commerce GMV (Gross Merchandise Value — the total dollar/ruble value of all goods sold through a platform, before the platform takes its commission), up from 23% in 2019.

Wildberries’ annual revenue now exceeds ₽4.1 trillion (≈ $51.3 billion) — over 2% of Russia’s entire GDP. Roughly one in every 50 rubles in the Russian economy passes through the platform.

Net profit for the combined Wildberries & Russ entity, known as RVB (the merged holding company that combines the Wildberries marketplace with the logistics operator Russ), hit ₽104 billion (≈ $1.3 billion) in 2024 — up 3.5x from ₽29.3 billion (≈ $366 million) in 2023.

RVB ranked as Russia’s #2 retailer overall by turnover, at ₽4.56 trillion (≈ $57 billion) , as of 2025 data.

OK, we get it, Big Red Car, but why?

The “why” is as follows:<br>Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy says they struck specific targeted Wildberries facilities "involved in supplying the Russian military with drone components, navigation equipment, and other gear."

Ukraine further justifies its targeting a “civilian” commercial facility because it directly supplies military gear and as such is an attack on Russian military logistics and supply chains, a perfectly appropriate target.

Ukraine also wants to bring a more general awareness of the war to a broader crossection of Russians — the elite in Moscow and St. Petersburg — as a psychological war objective to foment unrest, dissatisfaction, and dissent.

Ukraine wants to send the message there is no safe area in Russia particularly in the big cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg.

The underlying reason is to simply destroy the Russian economy in the same way that Ukraine targets and has now impacted as much as 40% of Russian refining capacity.

Oh, amigo, the Russians are pissed. Here’s the dialogue:<br>The primary response has been to condemn the Ukrainian attacks as “terrorism.” Take a second and laugh through that one. I know, the Russians whining about terrorism is a good one.

Wildberries is run by the weathiest woman in Russia (school teacher Tatyiana Kim, launched from her apartment with $700 whilst on maternity leave) and she is used to getting her way. Understandably, merchants with product entrusted to Wildberries wanted to be compensated — COMPENSATED — for their losses to which she said, “Fuck off, peasants.” Consider this a topic in flux. Huuuuuuge controversy and enormous impact on the Russian economy.

The other aspect is Wildberries is leveraged to their bloody crown and this attack will have a direct impact on their ability to repay debt and for those banks to survive. This is a big deal. Russian banking is beginning to wobble.
