Fast 68030 Processor Card: Oliver Achten Is Working on the "Performer PF1230"

Oliver Achtens' P-Vision, a graphics card for the PCMCIA slot of the A600/A1200, is set to be accompanied by the "Performer PF1230," a turbo card that aims to be the fastest 68030-based processor card of all time. This is achieved by foregoing FastRAM - instead, the card is equipped exclusively with (zero waitstate) cache - specifically 32 MB of it, which requires the use of very expensive SRAM: The developer states that the purchase price for the eight RAM modules (10 ns access time) is approximately 240 euros.

The finished product should have the following characteristics:

Amiga 1200 CPU card for 68030 and 68EC030 CPUs

32MB zero waitstate cache

software-configurable clock speed (14 MHz – 60 MHz)

FPU socket, clock adjustable independently of the CPU (14 MHz - 60 MHz)

68EC020 fallback mode, up to 11.5 MB of cache usable

IDE Booster

fastest 68030 PCMCIA interface (9.5 MB/s for P-Vision)

MAPROM function

Real-time clock

The developer is answering questions in a thread on a1k.org (German, registration required); due to the early stage of the project, there is no information yet regarding the planned release or the remaining development time. (cg)
