Japan's 2026 first flush came in early and clean, with no frost and good yields, yet the spring auctions still set records. Kagoshima's first trading day ran about 60 percent above a year earlier; the Uji auction average rose 22 percent. Tencha now accounts for roughly 90 percent of Uji trade by value, with total Uji volume projected to double to ¥10.4 billion. A good harvest is not loosening the ceremonial-grade market, because the demand pulling on it is structural, not seasonal. We log each new print here as it lands.

I source matcha for a small US brand. I've spent every spring since I started tracking the Uji opening auction, because it's the closest thing the matcha world has to a futures market. This page is what I check when someone asks me what's actually happening with matcha prices right now.
Current state of the 2026 matcha market
The 2026 first flush came in early with good yields and no frost, reversing 2025's frost-damaged Kyoto crop, yet spring auction prices still set records.
Kagoshima's first auction (April 6) rose about 60 percent year over year; the Uji auction average rose 22 percent to ¥20,879/kg. Tencha is now ~90 percent of Uji trade, with volume projected to double to ¥10.4 billion (Nikkei; Asahi Shimbun).
Japan's fiscal 2025 green tea exports hit a record 13,125 tonnes, up 42% YoY, with powdered tea at about 70% of volume, roughly 9,188 tonnes matcha-led. Export value roughly doubled to ¥84.7 billion (Jiji Press / Finance Ministry).
The United States is now the single largest destination for Japanese tea, roughly 30 percent of export tonnage and matcha-led (GJTA, Dec 2025).
Tencha wholesale is running 30 to 60 percent above pre-2025 levels. Plan for today's prices as the new normal for the next 24 to 36 months; new tea plants take 4 to 5 years to mature.

The Kyoto Uji opening is the bellwether event. Its prints anchor every downstream auction for the rest of the season. Regional auctions in Aichi (Nishio), Shizuoka, and Kagoshima for non-Uji ceremonial-grade leaf calibrate against the Uji opening as the reference point.
