Hello world!

I’ve recently gotten a haircut, and that got me thinking about how it’s a unique experience compared to other routines.

Unlike most daily tasks, it doesn’t require us to be actively engaged in the act. By that, I mean all we really do is sit and let the barber do their thing. We are presented with a chance to stay still and be present because we are physically wrapped in a cape. While sitting, I’m reminded of the Plum Village’s approach to meditation. I spend the time focusing on my breathing, and gently resting my eyes.

Letting someone else work on my appearance is an act of trust. I hand over my control and let something else, in this case the barber’s action, take its course. Getting a haircut also means we are getting rid of part of ourselves, our hair. Before, I felt the heaviness and cluttered feeling, but afterward, I felt a sense of lightness.

For others, getting a haircut can also be a social experience. I see many people actively engage in conversation with the barber. They exchange stories, problems, life advice, or even just gossip. Occasionally I participate in these conversations, but oftentimes it’s an opportunity for me to practice deep listening.

Our days are filled with endless notifications, work, and running errands. Having just 30 minutes to sit and do nothing can be a luxurious moment.
