Zohran Mamdani announced grocery store rationing, ID requirement - The Horn News

New York City’s socialist mayor’s plan to open a government-run grocery store has already announced they will copy the classic Soviet model: Rationing.

The number of items available per shopper will be limited, and every shopped will require state identification to access the socialist “utopia.”

They will demand shoppers show identification to buy groceries, but also calls requiring ID to vote racist.

Zohran Mamdani’s administration announced the final details of its city-owned grocery store plan last week, and confirmed that shoppers will need to present identification to access the goodssold at the government-run stores.

NYC Economic Development Corporation interim chief Jeanny Pak described the system as a “library card-esque” identification program. They also said they were designing a system to prevent hoarding and reselling of the cheap goods.

In other words, rationing.

Mamdani defended the requirements.

“Our request for proposal makes it very clear that this is a program for New Yorkers to be able to put food on the table, not a program for people to be able to make a quick buck through reselling,” he said.

Spencer Pratt, a Republican who ran for Los Angeles mayor and has emerged as one of the most entertaining MAGA voices on X, quickly pounced.

“Racist Commie Mamdani is going to make you show ID in his markets,” Pratt posted. “You want your government-subsidized arugula? Show your papers! Ask for ID to vote? BIGOT!!!”

“Are you starting to realize what disingenuous lying buffoons these commies are?”

National Review’s Inez Feltscher Stepman wasn’t impressed, either.

“A realistic short-term prediction is that MamdaniMarts will become havens for half-criminal resale markets, outright thievery, the homeless, and the mentally ill,” she wrote.

The plan, announced during Mamdani’s 100-day address in April, calls for $65 million in taxpayer spending to build five city-owned grocery stores, one in each of New York’s five boroughs, that will sell bread, cheese, produce, and other staples at a 30% discount. The first store is tentatively set to open in Hunts Point in the Bronx by the end of 2027.

Critics expect early cost overruns and delays.

Mamdani’s plan is modeled directly on a 2023 proposal by Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson. Chicago quietly shelved it. A donor-run “community co-op” has been failing to open in Chicago for nearly 6 years.

The only comparable government-run grocery store that existed in the United States — in Baldwin, Florida — was, per a 2023 Chicago feasibility study, “a perennial money loser” that shut its doors last year.

The mayor who wants to abolish voter ID is requiring government ID to buy a rationed numbers of loaves of bread.

The only real question is how fast it will fail.
