Why it matters

Consumer social products create permanent operating pressure. Bier's exit shows how quickly that burden can exhaust a visible product leader, while Meta's veterans show how long the consequences last.

EDITORIAL

Nikita Bier spent 400 days leading product at X, called it a "24/7 job," handed leadership to three other people and moved into an advisory role. Then he said he needed a breather.

Fair enough. But let us ration the medals.

Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook in 2004. Andrew "Boz" Bosworth joined in 2006 and helped build the original News Feed. Nearly two decades later, both remain inside Meta, still shipping products while regulators, politicians, employees, advertisers and billions of users hammer on the walls.

Bier's tenure amounted to roughly 5% of Bosworth's time at Facebook and Meta. Time alone does not measure pressure or suffering, but it does measure something unfashionable in technology: endurance.
