Signal Login: optional registration without a phone number will require a one-time payment
7 August 2026 16:12 CEST
As our regular readers know, Signal is working on a way to register an account without a phone number. New hints reveal that this optional alternative registration method for Signal will require a one-time payment.
The ability to register for Signal without a phone number is a frequently requested feature. While Signal hides phone numbers by default and gives users control over who can discover them, some users would still like the option to create an account without using a phone number.
As we wrote in our article last week, the main challenge and one of the reasons Signal does not yet offer registration without a phone number is preventing spam and abuse. In a recently published video, Signal CTO Ehren Kret said that Signal needed to find a way to induce a cost for signing up without a phone number.
At the time, it was unclear whether this "cost" would mean a monetary fee or another type of barrier designed to prevent abuse. Now, we have uncovered more details about the feature.
Signal Login, one-time payment, price unknown
New references in Signal’s source code reveal that this feature will be called "Signal Login". This appears to be the internal and likely public name for Signal’s upcoming phone number-free registration option.
Signal’s source code also shows that Signal Login will be offered as a paid option. It will require a one-time payment and is not a subscription. The payment requirement is intended to serve as an additional barrier against spam and abuse. Given that Signal is a non-profit organization, the fees are expected to be reasonable and will help support Signal’s mission.
The code currently contains only example amounts; the exact price is not yet known.
Availability
Registration without a phone number will be optional and will not replace the current signup process.
It’s not yet known when Signal Login will be available. Based on the references and hints found in the source code, we expect it to become available in the near future.
As always, as soon as there’s more news, you’ll find it on our website and social media.
