In 2023, Jason Arday became the youngest black professor in Cambridge University’s history at age thirty-seven, when he was appointed to a chair in the sociology of education. Now, after accusations of plagiarism and serial fabulation turned his appointment into a fiasco for his employer, he has stepped down from his position, saying: “I no longer wish to feel as though I am living under a constant spotlight.”<br>Commenting on the Arday case, the ex-academic and Atlantic journalist Tyler Austin Harper argued that elite universities have a record of elevating “black mediocrities” into celebrated, first-ever positions—even as they “skip over actual black heavy hitters.” Another black academic posed an obvious challenge: What is the evidence, beyond Harper’s take on a few prominent cases?
