How it works
One page. Three hops. No single point that sees it all.
Ordinary browsing is a straight line from your machine to the site, and every<br>hop along the way can read both ends of it. Onion routing breaks that line into<br>three legs and gives each one only half the picture.
HOP 01 · GUARD
Sees you, not the site
The first relay receives traffic from your connection, so it knows your IP<br>address. What it passes on is still wrapped in two more layers of encryption,<br>so it has no idea which site you asked for.
HOP 02 · MIDDLE
Sees neither end
The middle relay only knows the relay before it and the relay after it. It<br>never learns your address and never learns the destination. It exists so the<br>first and last hop can't compare notes.
HOP 03 · EXIT
Sees the site, not you
The exit relay makes the actual request to the website. The site logs the<br>exit relay's IP address, in whatever country it happens to sit. Your own<br>address never appears in that log.

Your address is on every request you make.

Every site you open receives your public IP address, because it<br>needs somewhere to send the reply. Your internet provider sees the name of every<br>site you look up. Neither of them asked your permission; it's simply how a direct<br>connection works.

Which sites you connect to, when, and for how long — even when the pages<br>themselves are encrypted.
The site sees
Your public IP address, which maps to your city and your provider, and<br>follows you from visit to visit.
Everything in between sees
Routers, resolvers and any network you're borrowing — a café, a hotel, an<br>airport — sit on the same straight line.
