Taliban Administration Announces South Asia Internet Transit Through Afghanistan

The Taliban’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has announced that a portion of internet traffic from South Asian countries is currently being transited through Afghanistan’s fiber optic network to Central Asian countries.
According to the ministry, nearly three billion dollars have been invested so far in Afghanistan’s fiber optic and telecommunications sectors, and the development process in this area is ongoing. Officials claim that Afghanistan has extensive capacity to expand its fiber optic network and enhance telecommunications services.
Enayatullah Alkawusi, spokesperson for the Taliban’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, stated that the transfer of internet between South Asian and Central Asian countries flows through Afghanistan. He believes that Afghanistan’s geographical position has turned it into a suitable transit route for information transfer.
Several economic analysts have also stated that Afghanistan can play a role in regional economic connectivity. According to them, just as Afghanistan holds the capacity to transit energy from Central Asia, it can also play a similar role in the transit of fiber optic cables, internet, and commercial goods.
Some private sector members have spoken about investment opportunities in the telecommunications sector, emphasizing that domestic and international companies are operating in this field and that thousands of citizens have been provided with employment opportunities.
Due to its geographical position between South and Central Asia, Afghanistan has always been considered a potential transit route in the fields of energy, trade, and communications.
