many years ago I found a tutorial for a simple guestbook in php and mysql

it was one of the first web dev tutorials that clicked for me

in a few steps that afternoon

i had a working guestbook

on the world wide web

that was quite something

but more than that

i could understand all steps

1) user writes a comment into a form<br>2) user submits the form to the server<br>3) comment gets stored in mysql

from that point on it was easy to get the comment<br>back out of the db and show it to future visitors

i could understand what every line of code does

and why it is there in the first place

since that afternoon i built many guestbooks

guestbooks with a twist

a guestbook that cosplays as a photo album

a guestbook that cosplays as a personal blog

a guestbook that cosplays as magazine about japanese video games

a guestbook that cosplays as project management tool

later there also were frameworks like wordpress, ruby on rails, django, flask, laravel, next.js and many more

that help you build guestbooks and guestbooks with a twist

and platforms like heroku, joyent, appengine, cloudflare, vercel, supabase, shopify, wp-engine and many more

you can also mix it up and use lisp, haskell, ruby, python, rust, zig, erlang, elixir, …

or postgres, clickhouse, duckdb, sqlite, durable objects, …

you name it

of course big important web apps are more than a guestbook

some have quite a few twists sprinkled on top

twitter, airbnb, reddit, hacker news, shopify, basecamp, notion, buffer, intercom, pagerduty, slack, gmail, facebook, google, github, instagram, tiktok, amazon, netflix, tailscale, …

but if you squint a little

you can find

in all of them

that small php guestbook

big things have small beginnings
