A cooler is the house's answer to a winning streak — the deck that
has been seen to, or the man they sit down across from you when the night has
gone your way for too long. There are thirty-two of them in this building, and
they are expecting you.

It is noughts and crosses, and it is not

Tic-tac-toe is a solved nine-move game. Everybody knows it ends in a draw,
which is exactly why it is not the win condition here — the board is a
damage engine . The man opposite has health, and completing a
line is how you take it off him.

A line is exactly three cells. A deck is fifty-two cards. So every line you
complete is read as a three-card poker hand , scored, and
thrown across the table:

7♠ 8♠ 9♠ STRAIGHT FLUSH (80 + 24 chips) × (6 + 3♠) = 936
K♥ K♦ K♣ THREE OF A KIND (60 + 30 chips) × 5 = 450
2♦ 9♦ J♦ FLUSH (40 + 21 chips) × 3 = 183
4♣ 7♥ A♠ HIGH CARD (15 + 22 chips) × (1 + 1♠) = 74

Which means every card in your hand is pulling in two directions at once:
where it goes, and what it makes . The cell
that blocks him is rarely the cell that pays you, and the game is the argument
between those two.

A completed line burns away when it scores, so the board never fills up, never
stalemates, and the same three cells can pay you again and again.

The one thing worth learning

A decent opponent blocks every single threat you make, every time. So a single
threat is not a plan.

Two threats at once is. One card completing two lines scores
both and doubles the lot, and it is the only line he has no answer to — he
gets one move a turn and there are two ways through. The board tells you where
the forks are; taking them is the whole skill.

What a run is

Eight rooms of four fights, deeper into the building each time: three regulars
and a boss who plays with an extra rule — sealed corners, a hot seat, a hand
two cards short. The same faces keep turning up, scaled, and one of them will
eventually be waiting for you with nineteen years of teaching behind his eyes.

Between every fight there is a back room, and that is where the run is
actually built:

40 charms — passive, permanent, and the interesting ones
cost you something. A charm with no drawback is not a decision.

17 hexes — one shot each. Seal a cell, salt a card off the
board, blind him for three turns.

Hand levels — raise the chips and multiplier of one poker
hand for the rest of the run. Levelling High Card buys a better bad turn;
levelling Straight Flush buys a better good one. Both are on the counter at
