The incident shows the dark side of the very popular TikTok app in Romania and the toxic effects of disinformation spread on social media
Seven people have been detained in Romania after they blocked an ambulance with vehicles, threw stones and hit it with axes after watching a fake video on TikTok claiming that ambulances in the area were kidnapping children.
The driver suffered an eye injury and was operated on after the attack on Sunday . One woman is under investigation for throwing a rock that smashed the windscreen and injured the driver.
On Sunday, having viewed the fake TikTok post about a “black ambulance” allegedly roaming the area to abduct children, six men and one woman attacked an ambulance while it was transporting a patient to hospital.
The attack happened in the Transylvanian village of Recea-Cristur and started when the ambulance was heading to pick up a patient. En route the ambulance crew stopped to ask local residents for directions but grew suspicious after people reportedly began fleeing, shouting and filming the ambulance.
The crew eventually picked up the patient and set off for hospital but were attacked on the way. Two vehicles allegedly blocked the ambulance’s path, while the attackers threw stones and struck it with axes.
According to the Cluj county police, the Dej Rural Police Section said the seven culprits were aged 18 and 44 and from the village.
The Dej Court approved their detention for 30 days and they are being probed on suspicion of assault, acts of violence and disturbing public order.
Defense Minister Radu Miruță called for a draft law to be urgently adopted against online disinformation, saying that fake news spread on social media "generate violence in the real world."
TikTok is massively popular in Romania as has a reach of about 9 million active users. Reports say that adult users in Romania spend over 30 hours a month on the app, marking some of the highest use intensity in the Central and East European region.

Bayar Menzat, an artificial intelligence researcher, told Digi24 how people can become better at distinguishing between real and AI footage. He also described how AI-generated video can be posted on platforms like TikTok without an AI-generated content label.
“I looked last night to see which videos specifically related to Cluj were circulating on TikTok. In general, when someone first uploads an AI-generated video, TikTok places a label saying that the clip was generated using generative artificial intelligence.
“The problem arises when that clip is downloaded and reposted, text is added over it, its resolution is reduced, and all the original information is lost. At that point, it becomes harder for platforms to display the banner, and the label disappears.
“People can generally become better at identifying AI-generated videos. If we are talking strictly about videos generated using artificial intelligence, they still have many problems with something called temporal consistency. For example, I saw a video in which a driver disappeared for a second, or a door closed and then opened like a ghost.
