Kubota Corporation (Head Office: Kita-ku, Osaka; President and CEO: Shingo Hanada, hereinafter “Kubota”) announced the launch of a U.S. pilot program in August 2026 to demonstrate a new approach to decentralized water infrastructure for residential developments and communities in water-scarce and contaminated areas.<br>In collaboration with AirJoule LLC (“AirJoule”), a developer of water-from-air systems that generate potable water by capturing moisture from the atmosphere, Kubota will pilot two systems in California and Texas to evaluate the performance and feasibility, as a key component of the decentralized water system concept. The initiative will be led in the U.S. by Kubota Water and Environment U.S.A. Corporation (KWU), Kubota’s North American water business.

Decentralized Water Circulation Infrastructure

1. Background and Objectives

Water scarcity has become an increasingly serious problem in the U.S., driven by population growth and climate change. Groundwater depletion and contamination are making it increasingly difficult to secure reliable water supplies. In some areas like the southwest, limited water availability is already restricting residential development.

Conventional centralized water infrastructure, consisting of large-scale treatment facilities and extensive pipeline networks, requires significant investment and long lead times for expansion. As a result, expectations are growing for decentralized water systems that enable water generation, treatment, and reuse within a limited area. However, even with these systems, securing a reliable water source remains a critical issue, limiting wider adoption.

AirJoule’s technology captures moisture from the air to produce drinking water, making it applicable to water-scarce regions. It has the potential to provide a scalable, energy-efficient source of water. Kubota has partnered with AirJoule to integrate this technology into its decentralized water infrastructure.

Kubota brings decades of experience in water and wastewater solutions, including membrane bioreactors (MBR), onsite reuse systems (KORe), and ductile iron pipes. By integrating water-from-air technology, Kubota aims to establish a new concept for decentralized water infrastructure that combines water generation, supply, wastewater treatment, and reuse for residential communities in the U.S.

2. Overview of pilot projects

Kubota will evaluate the performance of AirJoule’s technology under actual environmental conditions and develop operation and maintenance (O&M) and sales frameworks. Based on these pilot activities, Kubota aims to assess the feasibility of deploying this decentralized water circulation infrastructure.

3. Future Outlook

Looking ahead, Kubota aims to commercialize the integrated solution by 2030, combining water generation, treatment, and reuse (using Kubota Onsite Reclamation Systems) into a single, decentralized platform. Leveraging Kubota Water and Environment U.S.A.’s established presence in the U.S., Kubota will also build the sales and service infrastructure needed to support long-term deployment.

Under the sales partnership with AirJoule, KWU will take the lead in introducing AirJoule’s system to the U.S. domestic market at pilot locations and beyond, ensuring local support, service and integration with Kubota’s broader portfolio.

This initiative reflects Kubota’s commitment to expanding its water and environmental business in North America by delivering practical solutions to critical water infrastructure challenges and helping communities secure reliable water supply even in the most constrained environments.
