UMD Computer Science Graduates Report 95% Job Placement Rate
The University Career Center survey shows strong employment outcomes, higher starting salaries and continued graduate school enrollment for the class of 2025.

The University of Maryland’s Department of Computer Science reported a 95% job placement rate for its class of 2025, according to a survey conducted by the University Career Center. The annual graduation survey, which covers students who completed degrees in August and December 2024 and May 2025, found that graduates continued to secure employment across the technology sector while also pursuing advanced degrees at universities nationwide.
"These results reflect both the strong technical foundation our students develop and the many ways they engage with research, internships and other opportunities while they're here," said Department Chair Matthias Zwicker, who holds the Elizabeth Iribe Chair for Innovation and the Phillip H. and Catherine C. Horvitz Professorship. “It's rewarding to see the strong career outcomes our graduates continue to achieve.”
The survey tracked outcomes for 1,188 graduates and collected data from 906 students, resulting in a 76% knowledge rate. Among respondents, 78.5% entered the workforce and 16.2% continued their education. Only 1.5% of graduates were reported as unplaced at the time of the survey, while 3.8% had not yet finalized their post-graduation plans.
Graduates also reported higher starting salaries than the previous year. The median starting salary increased to $119,000, with the middle half of respondents earning between $90,000 and $145,000. More than 200 graduates also reported receiving employment bonuses, with a median bonus of just over $10,300.
Internships continued to be one of the strongest predictors of employment. More than 85% of respondents completed at least one internship during their time at Maryland, and nearly 60% completed multiple internships. Among graduates who described how they found their jobs, internships were the most frequently cited pathway, ahead of online job sites, personal contacts and career fairs.
Graduates accepted positions with employers across the technology, finance, government and defense sectors. Companies hiring multiple UMD graduates included Amazon, Capital One, Meta, Bloomberg, Google and Microsoft, while others joined startups, federal agencies and research organizations. Software engineering remained the most common career path, with graduates also entering roles in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and data science.
Although many graduates accepted jobs across the country, nearly 45% remained in Maryland, Virginia or Washington, D.C. Others relocated to technology hubs including California, New York and Washington state.
Graduate school also remained a popular option. Of the 146 graduates who continued their education, nearly nine in 10 enrolled in master's programs, most commonly in computer science. More than half chose to remain at UMD for graduate study.
“Our students define success in many different ways,” Zwicker said. “Whether they enter the workforce, continue their education or pursue entrepreneurial ventures, we're pleased to see them building on the experiences they had at UMD.”
