Why Social Media Generates Incoherence in the Reader, and Great Books Coherence
A sentence without a paragraph to host it -- is misplaced.
A paragraph without a chapter to host it -- is dismembered.
A chapter without a book to contextualize it -- is frameless.
A book without a cultural tradition to carry it -- is rootless.
Social media usually strips thought of these layers of context. Or it encourages thoughts without such a coherent enclosure to them.
Therefore, Social media generates incoherence.
It leaves us with fragments that talk past each other, without coherent frameworks for thought, emotion, and action.
Great books are the exact opposite.
A sentence is embedded in a logically coherent paragraph; the paragraph in a chapter; the chapter in a book; and the book in a strong cultural tradition.
This is how coherence is built -- from sentence to tradition -- providing a framework for coherent thought and action.
Great books generate coherence in the reader.
Social media in contrast, generates incoherence.
Ultimately -- it is coherence of emotion, thought and action which makes us effective in the long run. Something to take into account in how we allocate our time and life.
