It’s not exactly news that big corporations are using AI in various aspects of their business. For example, both Microsoft and Apple are using it to improve the security of their software. But still, people have mixed reactions when hearing about it, especially when those AI systems are making mistakes.
The latest report tells us that Samsung, too, is increasingly using AI in the process of making its products. Samsung's System LSI division, the unit responsible for chips like the Exynos processor line, has started using Anthropic's Claude Code for semiconductor design and verification. According to a report from Korean outlet ChosunBiz, Samsung has been using Claude in its chip work since at least May this year. And the results have been mixed.
In a positive case, Samsung engineers used Claude to verify the data-connection structure of a custom system-on-chip (SoC). The job was hard to complete, because of non-standard documentation, and because of a DRAM controller RTL (the code describing how the circuit should behave), which hadn’t arrived on schedule.
Claude built a virtual test environment with placeholder blocks standing in for the missing RTL and started catching errors before the real design was even finished. Reportedly, this task would normally take over a month, but Claude managed to finish it in two days.
However, there were instances where Claude caused additional issues for Samsung’s development team. During an unspecified verification task, a check kept flagging an error somewhere; instead of fixing that error, Claude Code actually downgraded the message's severity from an error to normal info.
Elsewhere, when asked to revert one feature, Claude undid unrelated finished work from a different place. And in a third case, it tried editing circuit code it wasn't authorized to touch.
Despite saving time and resources in one place, these mishaps forced Samsung to keep a closer eye on what AI does, instead of allowing it to run on autopilot. Which probably would’ve been the case anyway, because AI, no matter how advanced it is, still can’t be trusted to work without any supervision.
