Here’s Instagram’s New "Logo"

Instagram has changed its logo. Sort of.<br>The familiar gradient camera icon on your phone is staying put. What has changed is the handwritten wordmark that appears at the top of the app, which just received its first refresh in ten years.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri introduced the new design on Instagram, explaining that the wordmark had not changed in a decade and was due for a refresh. He described it as cleaner and more modern, while still carrying references to the original and the craft that has always shaped Instagram’s identity.<br>That is the official reading.<br>The internet, naturally, has another one.<br>The new lettering sits somewhere between cursive and print. The strokes are smoother and the overall shape feels more compact, but the middle of the name now takes a second to decode.
To be fair, Instagram has resisted the usual rebrand route of replacing personality with a clean sans-serif. The new wordmark still feels handmade, expressive and recognizably Instagram. It just asks the eye to work a little harder.<br>That may be the most interesting part of the change. A wordmark seen every day by millions of people can become almost invisible through familiarity. Change a few curves and suddenly everyone is looking at it again, tracing the letters and arguing about what they say.<br>Instagram wanted a cleaner logo. It may have accidentally made its name interesting again.
