OpenAI’s Rumored Speaker Belongs on Keychains

I’ve been using ChatGPT’s voice conversation capabilities since late 2023, primarily while driving. It continuously impresses me by helping me tackle tasks, learn new concepts, discuss current events, and manage navigation without ever having to take my eyes off the road.<br>Compared to Siri on my iPhone 15 Pro Max—which still struggles with basic back-and-forth conversation, even the new Siri in beta—ChatGPT feels remarkably natural. Using ChatGPT voice for navigation is like having a local passenger guiding you with familiar context, like mentioning, “That new mechanic is right across from the McDonald's on Dorset."<br>OpenAI has said it wants to change how we interact with the internet, shifting the primary interface from screens to voice. The company has reportedly been working on a device, or family of devices, since its April 2025 collaboration with Jony Ive. They haven’t released many details about what it looks like or exactly what it is, but reports suggest OpenAI’s debut device may be a portable puck- or doughnut-shaped smart speaker.<br>If true, that feels like a fundamental misstep. Asking users to manage yet another portable gadget alongside their everyday carry is a recipe for the drawer, a mistake we already watched the Humane AI Pin make. A sleek smart speaker keychain accessory would make far more sense. Your keys are something you rarely leave home without, and attaching an AI assistant to your key ring would let it slot naturally into an existing habit. It would always be close by, whether you’re out in the world or back at home, ready for a conversation when needed.<br>Overall, I’m very interested in hearing more about their first device and whether or not it’s a keychain accessory or something else that fits into our day to day habits.<br>Curious, do you use ChatGPT voice too and how / when do you find yourself using it?
