Qwen 3.8 27B (just released) running locally is pretty good. In Cloudflare OS it made me a collaborative whiteboard with real-time multiplayer cursor tracking. No other model, frontier or otherwise, has ever added cursor tracking without further prompting.
It also self-reviewed and even self-tested by calling the gadget's RPC interface without prompting, which was neat to see.
I drew a tic tac toe board and had it play with me -- I was X and it was O. Two notes:
1. When I do this with frontier models, they draw perfect circles using Math.sin() and Math.cos(). Qwen did that too but added random noise to make it look hand-drawn.
2. Qwen played correctly. Back when I first tried this with Opus six months ago, it would play in the upper-right and end up losing to my fork. This little Qwen model literally said "I spotted a fork forming" and moved correctly to stop it. (To be fair, Opus at the time played better when I explicitly encouraged it to play to win, and later versions play better by default.)
3. Six months ago, GPT literally could not complete this task. It would draw its circle in the wrong place. It has gotten better since, but... this is a 27B open model doing what GPT failed at 6 months ago.
I'll admit that it does a lot more thinking than the frontier models do, so uses a lot more tokens. But it's running locally, so those tokens are, you know, free.
Pretty exciting!

Here was me playing tic tac toe with Opus in March, in an earlier version of what is now Cloudflare OS.

Opus 4.6 is smart enough to play tic tac toe on this whiteboard with me entirely by making API calls to the app's client API, yet dumb enough to lose at tic tac toe.

To emphasize for people not familiar with model sizes:
This model, Qwen 2.8 27B, is 1/100 the size of Kimi K3 and probably 1/200 the size of Claude Fable 5 (we don't know Fable's size, so this is an estimate).
It's small enough to run on a high-end consumer GPU like an RTX Show more

Thank you for the info - it's hard to keep track of all the new models. I'll have to spin this up on my strix halo box!
