TL;DR#
This post is long. Jump to whatever you care about.
I got Digital Technology / Exceptional Talent on the UK Global Talent Visa
What Global Talent actually is
The dates
My case centred on work with my name on it, not a founder or manager role
OSS and talks I did for fun later became part of the work and the visa
Tech Nation's latest approval rate is about 14%
Published write-ups of Talent granted mainly on OSS are scarce, including in Japanese
The numbers I looked up
Even a computer nerd can find a way to live abroad
This is not a how-to. It is what I submitted, and the career that led there.
Caution
This post is not legal advice. The policy details are as of August 2026; the rules, fees, and processing times all change. Check GOV.UK for the latest information when you apply.
On using AI
I used ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok to organise the structure and tighten the prose. I also used Exa to search public sources. I checked the final content and wording myself.
This English version was translated from the Japanese post by Grok 4.6. I checked the translation myself.
For the estimated chance of success at the time of application, I had GPT-5.5 and Claude Fable 5 (the nerfed versions from July onwards) estimate independently, and I took the close values. I also built the chart with Fable.
The Fermi estimate of how rare this is was done with GPT-5.6 Sol (max reasoning), then reviewed by Claude Fable 5.
Numbers and policy descriptions in the body were checked against primary sources, with citations.
A life on someone else's visa#
In Japan you almost never think about visas. In the UK, how long you can stay and how you can work are decided by your visa.
A visa is tied to something. An employer-sponsored visa is tied to the employer; a dependant visa is tied to a partner's visa. The expiry date follows you when you change jobs, are made redundant, or something happens in the family.
I have been in the UK since 2022 as a dependant on my wife's visa.
At the time I was earning from remote work for Japanese companies, and I had no plan to work in the UK. I picked the dependant visa without thinking too hard, because it was the easiest and the most flexible.
Daily life was fine, but I could only stay in the UK because of my wife's visa. With Global Talent, I can stay on the basis of my own record, not my wife or my employer.
What Global Talent actually is#
The UK Global Talent Visa is for people endorsed as a leader or potential leader in fields such as science, engineering, medicine, digital technology, and the arts.
Unusually free, as visas go#
Even the GOV.UK description makes the freedom look unusually high.
no job offer and no sponsoring employer
you can work as an employee, self-employed, or company director (you can start a company)
you do not have to tell the Home Office if you change jobs or leave a job
you can bring dependants
you can choose a period of up to 5 years, and you can extend
no minimum salary requirement and no English-language requirement
you can apply for ILR (settlement) after 3–5 years
Work visas are usually tied to an employer or a sponsor. Being able to apply and live on your own record, tied to nothing else, is quite rare.
Talent, or Promise#
The Global Talent Visa has two tracks. Exceptional Talent is for people already recognised as leaders in their field; Exceptional Promise is for people who may become leaders.

The application format is similar. Both require 3 recommendation letters, a CV, and up to 10 pieces of evidence that meet the criteria. What you can do after you get the visa is the same5, but the endorsement criteria and the guidance on career stage differ.
I applied under Talent because I worked in digital technology and had more than five years of experience. That was part of my context, not a standalone route test7.
Leader, not manager#
A leader here is not necessarily an organisational leader. They look at the impact of the work on digital technology and at external recognition, not at headcount or job title8.
I am not a people manager, and I am not a founder. I am an engineer who builds OSS. Even so, I was recognised as...
