What Is Ideal Body Weight?
Ideal body weight refers to a target weight range associated with the lowest overall health risk for a person's height, age, and gender. It is not a single perfect number but rather an estimated range, since healthy weight varies based on muscle mass, bone density, body composition, and individual physiology. Doctors, nutritionists, and fitness professionals use ideal weight estimates as a starting reference point rather than a strict target, because two people of the same height and gender can have very different healthy weights depending on their body frame and muscle mass. This calculator uses six independent, medically referenced formulas so you can see a full comparison rather than relying on a single equation that might not fit your body type.
Why There's No Single "Perfect" Number
Every ideal weight formula was developed using different populations, time periods, and clinical goals. Some were designed for medication dosing, others for general health screening. Because of this, formulas can disagree with each other by several kilograms for the same person. Rather than treating any single formula as absolute truth, the most useful approach is to look at the overall range these formulas produce, then adjust based on your body frame size, muscle mass, and personal health history.
How the Different Formulas Work
Devine Formula
Originally developed in 1974 for calculating medication dosages, the Devine formula has become the most widely used ideal weight formula in clinical settings. It sets a base weight for 5 feet of height and adds a fixed amount for every additional inch, with separate constants for men and women.
Robinson Formula
Published in 1983 as a revision of the Devine formula, the Robinson formula adjusts the base weight and per-inch increment slightly, generally producing marginally higher estimates than Devine for taller individuals.
Miller Formula
Also from 1983, the Miller formula uses a higher base weight but a smaller per-inch increment, which tends to produce results closer together for people of average height compared to the other formulas.
Hamwi Formula
Developed in 1964, the Hamwi formula was one of the earliest quick-estimate methods used by dietitians. It remains popular because of its simplicity, though it can overestimate ideal weight for...
