Proton Mail can now sort your incoming mail into different categories like Primary and Social, kind of like what Gmail's been doing since 2013. The company is rolling this feature out gradually to all web and mobile accounts through the end of September.
At the moment, there are six categories: "Primary" for personal messages, work communications, and priority notifications, "Social" for social media activity, "Promotions" for commercial deals, "Newsletters" for news, a "Transactions" tab for receipts or billing records, and an "Updates" category for automated notifications and alerts. Primary stays active permanently, though Transactions and Updates remain hidden by default until you toggle them on manually.
Proton promises that it doesn't scan your email's contents before it decides what category it belongs in, instead analyzing message "metadata." The company also noted that dragging a misfiled message to a new category teaches the system to route similar future messages to that specific location.
Similar to Gmail, you can turn off auto-categorization by heading over to Settings, clicking Messages and composing, then clicking the toggle under Email categories to disable the layout completely. On mobile apps, open Settings, select Mailbox preferences, and turn off Enable categories. You can also customize individual category tabs using the different on/off toggles, configure unread message counters, or manage desktop system notifications and push alerts for specific tabs without killing the entire feature.
In other Proton News, the company has released a CLI for its Proton Drive service on Windows, Mac, and Linux. With the new CLI, you can do direct file uploads, download folders, manage trash contents, and share files or process invitations directly inside your terminal environment. Proton said that the CLI is meant to complement the desktop app, not replace it, as things like real-time background folder syncing are better suited for the desktop client (which is only available on Windows and macOS, at least for now).
