Walmart finally launching Apple Pay support next week

Walmart has announced that it will finally begin rolling out Apple Pay support next week. The retailer has resisted offering Apple Pay support for more than a decade, despite pressure from shoppers.

Apple Pay is finally coming to Walmart

Walmart announced the news in a press release today. The company will roll out contactless support, including Apple Pay, to select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations starting on August 24. The feature will come to all stores in the United States by the end of this year, as well as fuel stations by mid-2027.

Walmart is adding broad contactless payment support, so that includes Apple Pay on iPhone and Apple Watch, Google Pay, contactless cards, and other payment platforms. Shoppers will also be able to add their Walmart and Sam’s Club cards to Apple Wallet and other platforms. Contactless support will exist alongside existing payment methods, including Walmart Pay.

The company says:

Tap to Pay gives customers and members another familiar and convenient way to pay at checkout using contactless payment methods. Whether picking up groceries, gifts or everyday essentials, they can check out using eligible contactless card, phone, or smartwatch. Customers and members can also add their eligible Walmart, Sam’s Club and OnePay cards to their digital wallets, giving them another convenient way to use their cards.

Walmart is one of the final major Apple Pay holdouts, so this is big news for consumers. For years, the retailer refused to offer contactless support in favor of Walmart Pay, its QR code-based payment system.

As recently as last year, Walmart doubled down on its belief that Walmart Pay was a more convenient solution for shoppers than Apple Pay. To use Walmart Pay, however, you have to add a debit or credit card to the Walmart app on your iPhone, then scan a QR code at checkout to pay with your iPhone.

A quick search on social media shows just how frustrated users had become by Walmart’s refusal to support Apple Pay.

After all, there is a reason that most other longtime Apple Pay holdouts caved years ago, including Kroger, Home Depot, and H-E-B.
