Don’t let activation energy expire
Activation energy lets you do things you wouldn’t otherwise be able to. Some people call this inspiration, or motivation. Others describe it as a supportive context. Here’s an example:
You’re trying to write an important work document, but you’re stuck at the blank page. For the whole afternoon, in between meetings, you try typing it out.
After work, you blow off steam and text your friend about it. They ask you, “What’s it about?” and you explain to them over text. You realize you just wrote the start of your document. Your friend provided you with activation energy.
This energy is a temporary superpower to do something you ordinarily wouldn’t be able to. And the thing is, if you don’t act on it, this energy expires.
The easier a task is, the less activation energy you need to do it. Breaking down a task and preparing for it means you’ll need less activation energy to do it. (These blog posts are small enough for me to do every day.) Structures can help you focus your activation energy.
Sometimes, activation energy compounds. Done is the engine of more.
The more you practice a task, the less activation energy you need to accomplish it. (e.g., habits)
If you run low on activation energy, find ways to replenish it. Be around your community. If the scenic route is more energizing, it’s worth it, even if it seems longer than the direct path.
If it’s a passing whim, it’s a very short expiration date; maybe it disappears in hours.
